One store for every 925 people
Korea has 55,206 convenience stores — roughly one for every 925 residents, or 10.8 per 10,000 people. That density is among the highest in the world, and it underpins a lot of Korean daily life: convenience stores here handle parcels, bill payments, ATM withdrawals, phone top-ups and, as we have written elsewhere, a licensed set of basic medicines.
The raw regional counts are unsurprising — Gyeonggi leads with 15,266 and Seoul follows with 9,475, because that is where the people are. The interesting pattern only appears when you divide by population, and it runs in a direction most people would not predict. The place with the most convenience stores per person is not a city at all, and the place with the fewest is one of the newest and most affluent.

Jeju leads at 20.3 stores per 10,000 people — nearly double Seoul’s 10.2, and two and a half times Sejong’s 8.2. The provinces at the top are tourism and highway regions; the cities cluster in a narrow band near the national average; and the bottom is anchored by Sejong and the older industrial cities of Busan and Daegu.
Why the islands and highways win
The pattern makes sense once you stop thinking of convenience stores as serving only residents. A store’s customer base is everyone who passes it, and in some regions that is a very different number from the population.
- Jeju’s density is a tourism artefact. Its stores serve a resident population of 663,000 plus a very large annual visitor flow, so per-resident density overstates how many stores each local has and understates how hard each store works. The high number is real; its cause is transient customers, not local ones.
- Gangwon and the rural provinces are highway effects. Stores cluster on the intercity routes and around leisure destinations, serving drivers and weekenders rather than a dense residential base.
- Sejong’s low density reflects its newness. A planned city built recently has fewer of the small independent-turned-franchise stores that accumulate over decades in an older urban fabric.
- Busan and Daegu sit low despite being big. Established cities with older retail patterns and, in Daegu’s case, the same under-representation we saw in its Wi-Fi data — though convenience-store data is a commercial dataset, so the mechanism differs.
The Jeju point is worth generalising. Per-capita density measures stores against residents, but stores serve passers-by too — so any region with a large visitor-to-resident ratio will look store-rich per head without any local feeling especially well served. It is a real number answering a slightly different question than it appears to.

The most striking thing in the table is not the top or the bottom — it is the middle. Look at the run from 6th to 13th place: Gyeonggi, Jeonbuk, Gyeongnam, Daejeon, Seoul, Jeonnam & Gwangju, Ulsan, Incheon all sit between 10.0 and 11.1 stores per 10,000 residents. Eight regions inside a band barely one store wide.
That tight clustering is itself the finding. Convenience-store density in Korea has effectively saturated across most of the country — the market has filled in to roughly the same per-person level everywhere ordinary residential and commercial life happens, regardless of whether it is Seoul or Jeonbuk. When a market saturates, geography stops mattering and only the special cases stand out.
Which is exactly what the table shows. The regions that break out of the band do so for structural reasons that have nothing to do with how many locals want a convenience store: Jeju and Gangwon high because of visitors, Busan and Daegu and Sejong low because of age or newness. The eight-region cluster in the middle is the actual baseline, and it is remarkably flat — a sign of just how completely this particular piece of infrastructure has spread.
One caution on the middle ranks: with eight regions inside a single point of density, the exact ordering among them is noise. Whether Seoul is 10th or 8th on any given day depends on rounding, not on anything real. Read the band as a band, not as a league table — the meaningful information is the top three, the bottom three, and the flat stretch in between.
What this means on the ground
- Everywhere in Korea, you are close to a convenience store. Even the lowest-density region has one per 1,200 people, and in cities they are often visible two or three at a time.
- They do far more than sell snacks. Parcel pickup and drop-off, bill payment, cash withdrawal, transport-card top-up, and basic over-the-counter medicine are all standard.
- Most are open 24 hours, which is why they anchor the overnight gap when pharmacies and shops are closed.
- On Jeju and rural highways, they are trip infrastructure — the reliable stop for fuel-adjacent supplies, coffee and a toilet on a long drive.
- Prices are nationally consistent. Unlike many countries, a convenience store in a remote area charges much the same as one in central Seoul, so the dense rural coverage comes without a rural price premium.
One boundary on what this data can tell you: our records count stores but do not reliably distinguish the brand — the chain-name field is empty across this dataset — so we cannot break the 55,206 down by operator. Density by region is solid; a league table of chains is not something this data supports.
That brand gap is a genuine limit, and worth stating plainly because it is the question people most often ask. Korea’s convenience-store market is dominated by a small number of large chains, and a breakdown by operator would be a natural thing to want. But the source data we hold simply does not carry it — the field that would name the chain comes through empty for every one of the 55,206 records. We would rather tell you that than infer brands from store names and present a guess as a count. Where the data supports a number we give it; where it does not, we say so.
